Julie Sweet: The First Woman to Head Accenture as Chief Executive

Julie Sweet is an American businesswoman and lawyer who currently serves as the Chair and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Irish outsourcing services company, Accenture.

Sweet was born in 1967 and grew up in Austin, California, USA. During her high school years, she was known for her mastery of public speaking and debating.

Julie holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Claremont McKenna College, in addition to a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Columbia Law School.

She is also ranked as one of the most powerful women in business by Fortune magazine and was recognized on Time’s list of the 100 Most Influential People in the world.

Before her work at Accenture, Sweet was a lawyer at the firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore for 17 years and a partner for 10 years, becoming the ninth woman to join its institutional structure.

Accenture appointed Sweet as the General Counsel of the company in 2010. She then became the Chief Executive Officer of its North American business.

Since the beginning of her career, she had been a member of the company’s Global Management Committee alongside the then-CEO, Pierre Nanterme.

Sweet subsequently developed Accenture’s strategy for mergers and acquisitions deals.

Accenture appointed Sweet as the Chief Executive Officer of the company, effective September 2019, making her the first woman to hold this position.

At the time of her appointment, she was one of 27 women leading companies in the S&P 500 index and the 15th female CEO across all Fortune Global 500 companies.

In September 2021, Sweet became the Chair of Accenture’s Board of Directors.

Sweet is married to Chad Creighton Sweet and has two daughters.
