The Evolution of Minimum Wages in Egypt’s Private Sector in USD

The Egyptian government, represented by the National Wages Council, has made multiple adjustments to the minimum wage for private-sector employees between January 2022 and March 2025.

Recently, it set the minimum wage at 7,000 EGP, equivalent to approximately $139.38, based on an average exchange rate of 50.21 EGP per USD.

The first adjustment to the private sector’s minimum wage was in January 2022, when it was set at 2,400 EGP, equaling $153.46. One year later, in January 2023, the government increased it to 2,700 EGP, equivalent to $109.09.

By July 2023, the third wage increase raised the minimum wage to 3,000 EGP ($108.92). In January 2024, the government added 500 EGP, bringing the wage to 3,500 EGP ($112.90).

Later, in May 2024, the minimum wage was further increased to 6,000 EGP, equivalent to $119.76.

According to Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, the newly approved wage increase will take effect at the beginning of March 2025, with no exceptions. Additionally, the National Wages Council has set a minimum annual salary increase of 250 EGP per month for private-sector employees.

For the first time, a minimum hourly wage has also been introduced for part-time workers, ensuring their earnings do not fall below 28 EGP per hour, as per the labor law definition.
