Expatriate Minds: A Lost Treasure in the Outsourcing Industry

UNESCO defines the phenomenon of brain drain as an abnormal type of scientific exchange between countries.

According to press reports, approximately 824,000 Egyptian minds have emigrated abroad, with 89% of them working in America, 14% in Canada, and 2% in Spain.

The reasons for the emigration of skilled individuals from one country to another include the search for better residency and job opportunities, as well as an improved standard of living.

Approximately 100,000 specialists in medicine, engineering, and technology emigrate from Egypt annually.

It’s worth noting that there are 86,000 expatriate Egyptian scientists abroad, including 42 Egyptian scientists serving as university presidents and 1,883 Egyptian scientists in rare nuclear specializations.

The distribution of emigrants shows that 92% hold higher education qualifications, while 8% have postgraduate degrees, broken down into 3% with diplomas, 4% with master’s degrees, and 1% with doctorates.

Meanwhile, 54% of Arab students who emigrate to pursue their university studies refuse to return to their home countries, according to data from the General Union of Egyptians Abroad.
