How Do Wall Colors in Call Centers Affect Employee Behavior?

The choice of wall colors in call centers plays a significant role in employee behavior, especially since nearly 50% of their occupants are under the age of 29, while 22% are between 18 and 24 years old.

Several university studies have shown that the colors surrounding an employee’s workspace account for nearly 25% of their job satisfaction.

These studies also concluded that the appropriate use of colors, in addition to natural lighting and plants, creates a more comfortable and healthy work environment in the call center.

This, in turn, reduces employee absenteeism by up to 15% and increases productivity by as much as 20%.

According to David Philwood, CEO and Chief Consultant at TeleSoft Systems, a call center is similar to a high-density open workplace where employees are allocated small office spaces, ranging between 50 and 75 square feet.

Companies and more serious industries, such as banking and insurance, often use white or natural colors like cream and beige.

However, these colors can sometimes give the impression of being boring, safe, rigid, and dull.

It has been found that workers in confined spaces are less productive in a purely white office environment.

Therefore, choosing a light yellow color is considered suitable for sales offices where employees need to maintain a positive mindset while handling rejection during cold calls.

On the other hand, the color blue is ideal for call answering or order entry departments with high call volumes, as employees need to concentrate and remain calm under pressure while accurately copying the information provided by callers.

This color helps maintain a serene atmosphere, slows the heart rate, suppresses hunger, and lowers blood pressure.

Meanwhile, the green color is preferred for the walls of customer service call center areas. It helps employees assess the pros and cons of a situation and maintain a calm and peaceful work environment.

A red wall in the break room/cafeteria can enhance appetite, generate enthusiasm, and create a social and conversational atmosphere.

The turquoise color is suitable for training room walls as it calms the nerves of trainees. Meanwhile, lavender is a soothing and relaxing option for bathrooms.
